Air Tightness Testing Top Tip of the Day 3

Even the sockets leak in an Air Tightness Test!

Many of my customers are shocked and dismayed that when we're walking around checking for their leaks in the house, that the sockets are leaking as well. I know it's hard to believe, but they do. They're never going to be a major source of leakage in the home, but we typically have quite a few in a house nowadays, don't we? They all add up to a window that's always open in your house.

My Top Tip is to seal the wires at the last point prior to when they become a part of the socket.

To do this, you need to think about how your house is being constructed. If you're using timber for the interior walls, then you go after the drill-outs for the wires in the studs. Once the plasterboard is on, this forms a relatively tight seal. You can buy ready made grommets from the builders merchants, or you can fill the holes with caulk or silicone. I'd fill them rather than use the grommets as this is the cheaper and easier option. It takes 20 minutes to do this for all of your sockets in a house after the electrician has done his fixing.

I hope this helps
